Description:
The Berks Parks and Recreation Department is the steward of nearly 1200 acres of regional parks, historic sites and trails. Within the system, there is a rich legacy of historic buildings, sites, landscapes, features and collections. The purpose of this internship is to expand the historical knowledge of these significant resources to improve interpretation, programming and stewardship.

Skills Required:
The Planning and Research Intern(s) will work under the direction of the senior staff to document a variety of historic, cultural and/or prehistoric resources within the park system using national preservation and museum standards. Responsibilities will generally fall under the Park History Program on a variety of projects.
· Daily duties may include historical research, field surveys, architectural descriptions, landscape assessments, existing conditions analysis, cataloging, material analysis, treatment guidelines, documentation, inventories, accessioning and collections care as well as related interpretive and/or programming recommendations.
· Interns may photo-document resources, develop planning reports, prepare plans, drawings, and maps, and present findings and recommendations for further study to Department staff.
· Other duties may include assisting with walking tours and other educational and marketing programs. Develop and lead architectural walking tours and work with staff and volunteers on events.
· Interns may research, develop and complete architectural inventory forms for park properties, develop preservation-related educational tools and catalog artifacts and create small exhibits.
· They may also assist organizing and cataloging office records and archives and creating educational materials for history outreach.
Education Requirements:
Qualifications:
Interns should be pursuing a BA or MA in architecture, park planning, landscape architecture, historic preservation, history, art history, material conservation, archaeology, design and/or a related field. Good written, verbal and interpersonal skills are required.
These are unpaid internships.
