Country United States
Project Type Full-Time Regular
Project ID USACE-STL-2012-001
Project Description
Up to two postgraduate internships will be awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, for participation in a range of archaeological curation management projects. Interns will assist in the archaeological laboratory collecting data pertinent to completing cultural resource management summaries. Additionally, interns will assist in reference services and archives maintenance, rehabilitation of archaeological associated documentation collections, and archaeological and archival inventories. Interns will be required to write reports periodically throughout the appointment. Conducting visits to state archaeological records centers, collections centers, and military installations throughout the United States may be required.
The internship will provide participants with a broad exposure to archaeological collections management, archival and records management approaches and methods, as well as applied anthropology in the federal setting. Interns will be interacting with federal and state agencies, private and public universities and museums, cultural resource management personnel at military installations, and private contractors. The projects provide numerous possibilities for research concerning federal legislation and its impacts upon all aspects of archaeological collections management—both artifacts and archives/associated records—and the history and status of archaeological collections curation at the national, regional, or local levels.
Applicants should have received a bachelor’s or master’s degree within the past five years in anthropology, museum studies, history, historic preservation, archival science, or a related field of study or requirements to complete the degree should be expected on or about the start date. Experience with archaeological collections, site records, and archival materials is beneficial, as are word processing and database management skills associated with archaeological collections management. Good writing and verbal communication skills are required. Participants will be required to lift and manipulate heavy (up to 50 pounds) containers.
The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens and permanent residents without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, national origin, or status as a Vietnam Era veteran or disabled veteran. Participants will be selected based on academic records, recommendations, and compatibility of background and experience with project requirements.
This Postgraduate Research Participation Program is administered by Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Participants will be mentored by and participate at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections' offices in the St. Louis District.
Appointments are full time up to one-year and are renewable up to four additional years upon recommendation of the St. Louis District and dependent upon project funding. The participants will receive a monthly stipend. The stipend rate is determined based on level of education, training, experience, and program funding. Participants must show proof of health and medical insurance (either through a private plan or by purchase from the plan available through ORISE).
