Intern Lyndsay Graham works with volunteers.
Mount Vernon’s Department of Archaeology offers an ongoing internship program designed to give high school, undergraduate and graduate students experience in the field of historical archaeology. In the past, students have focused on different themes of colonial historical archaeology including African-American archaeology, industrial archaeology, landscape studies, museum education and outreach, website development / public relations, and material culture studies. We are currently accepting applications for fall 2011 and spring 2012.
Internships Available for 2011 / 2012:
• Digitizing Archaeological Collections
Mount Vernon's archaeologists are analyzing, documenting and digitizing the South Grove Midden, a rich collection of household and kitchen trash from the 1750s and 1760s. Interns research a class of artifacts, catalogue and document their assmeblage and upgrade the curation. The culmination of the internship is a series of reports which will be integrated into the South Grove Midden Online website. • Historical Document Transcription
Are you a history major? Do you love research and focusing on documents? Would you like to learn more about what objects were being purchased during the 1750s and 1760s in Virginia? If you answered yes to any of those questions, you could be interested in this internship. We are seeking students to help transcribe accounts from an eighteenth-century tobacco merchant who had a series of stores near Mount Vernon. Interest in material culture, economy of the tobacco trade, or experience with document transcription helpful. Seeking one intern fall 2011.
• Collections Management / Old Collections
Participate in an ongoing project to upgrade and document the collections from over 20 years of archaeology at Mount Vernon. Interns are needed to assist with rehousing, digitizing, cataloguing and assessing both the artifacts and their associated paper and photographic records. Applicants should have experience in an archaeological laboratory or classes in archaeological laboratory methods and / or artifact identification.
• General Archaeology
We are always seeking graduate or undergrad students interested in gaining experience in archaeology. These interns do a variety of field, laboratory and office tasks and the variety makes this a wonderful opportunity to explore historical archaeology.
